The big blizzard ... in 40 seconds

December 2010 Blizzard Timelapse from Michael Black on Vimeo.

Watch the snow from this week's blizzard build up in a backyard in Belmar, N.J., courtesy of photographer Mike Black. He took one frame every five minutes for about 20 hours, then put them together into one of the coolest time-lapse videos I've ever seen.

The Vimeo video was seen more than a million times today. Black says he's received e-mails from NBC and the other TV networks asking to show it off. Keeping the clock visible amid 32 inches of snow is a particularly nice touch.

While you're clicking around, check out Black's photo montage focusing on last week's total lunar eclipse.

Update for 7:15 p.m. ET: Is 40 seconds too long for you? See if you can spot an even more condensed 6-second version of the clip in this spot from "NBC Nightly News":

Looks like Mike Black experimented with 1 minute intervals between 11:50 AM and 12:05 PM - LOL. Nice work Mike.

Fantastic! I'd like to know how he stayed awake 20 hours and managed the tedium of taking a photo every 5 minutes without going crazy.

I imagine the camera was setting on a tripod and was on a timer. Makes more sense than pushing the button every 5 minutes. He or someone went to a lot of effort to keep the clock visible, except for a few film seconds, which represents about an hour or so. (40 seconds = 20 hours, so 4=2 or 2 seconds = 1 hour, which means we are watching the video at 6 frames per second). It's quite possible that more than one person was involved so that they could take naps during the night.

He had it on automatic timer, although he still would have to come out every once in a while to check on things ... if for no other reason than to keep the snow from covering up the darn clock!

The seemingly constant attempt to keep the clock visible made me chuckle. This was a pretty cool video, thanks for sharing :)

Gosh, we can't even do that in the Anchorage part of Alaska. Did see it at times in Maine 55 years, but not here in 15 years. This old great grandmother says, I LOVED IT... will save it to watch when anyone here complains. Does anyone remember that word got around by phone and 10 people one your party line, no T.V. no running water, except in a stream by the house for water, or if lucky a well. Love what the younger, (than me) have acomplished, love my computer. Thanks again.

    Mike did a great job!

I've now seen my first white Christmas. It snowed here in SC on Christmas Day--the first since 1963!

I've been to Phoenix, and I would take living in Minneapolis-St. Paul over Phoenix in any season of the year. Anyhow, I am in the "middle" of the "storm" in Philly. It's just some snow, folks, nothing to get alarmed about. Also knows as "winter."

Give me a warm sandy beach and a margarita any day of the year.

Illinois has to have some of the crappiest weather in the U.S.

Well, not as crappy as the Plains states, but crappy nonetheless.

Wow! I'm from Iowa - The plains states don't get it that bad. We have some nasty blizzards, but never 30 inches of snow! The east and great lakes regions always seem to get the huge snowfalls. We're crying when we get 8-10 inches of snow! I can't even imagine 30+ inches with 70+ mph winds! I love winter and I love Iowa, but am so sorry for all who have been pained by this disastrous storm!

And big time Kudos to Mr. Black for the awesome video!!

Too bad that didn't happen in Cancun when the global warming scammers met there recently. Cancun had the coldest temperatures on record but not cold enough for a blizzard. Hopefully the brainwashed masses wake up enough to realize they are only trying to tax us to death, literally! Carbon Dioxide is good for the earth, it is essential for life and increases plant growth. If CO2 were to triple it would not cause warming but only bring good things.

Co2 was chosen to be taxed because every person produces it, enabling the criminals to tax everybody who is alive and possibly even those who are dead too. It has nothing to do with environmentalism, it is a criminal scam and the perpetrators should be put in prison for life or executed for crimes against humanity. It is time to stand up against these criminals before they destroy mankind.
