How many will follow through on the Rapture prank suggested by New Zealand's Jonathan Elliot?

Oh, Rapture! Pranks are in the works

If you see scenes like this in your neighborhood, DON'T PANIC! Cast-off clothes are not a sign that the elect have been taken up in Saturday's scheduled Rapture. It's more likely to be a prank suggested by Jonathan Elliot, a self-described "architect of the liberal conspiracy" from New Zealand. Other pranksters have suggested filling blow-up dolls with helium and sending them heavenward ... or calling your boss at 5:58 p.m. local time and leaving a message about how much you love your job, then ending the call in midsentence. If you do such things, let folks know by sending Twitter updates with the #raptureprank or #rapturebomb hashtag. We'll see who has the last laugh this weekend.

It's already Saturday in New Zealand, but Elliot says he won't stand down until 6 p.m. Wellington time. I'll be blogging about the Rapture hype over the weekend, and you can follow the updates by checking CosmicLog.com/Rapture. You can also connect with the Cosmic Log community by "liking" the log's Facebook page or following @b0yle on Twitter. And for something completely different, check out "The Case for Pluto," my book about the controversial dwarf planet and the search for new worlds.

What this really points out is how much (tax free) money is taken in by Evangelists. Billboards, full page ads in USA Today, internet advertising, etc. are all paid for by human beings under the illusion that they are giving money to God. That is why religion always has been and always will be the perfect scam...

the ones using it that way will be held accountable for there wrong doins.the church is a great thing but like everthing some people will try to abuse it and the bad thing is they hurt alot of good people who are mislead.find a good church with honest folks and see where and what they do with there money.if they are on the up and up you can view the records anytime.

I'd like to see the Will's these believers have - do they leave anything to relatives (that would be me) that they think will be left behind?

If the believers did give everything away - if their life wasn't Hell on Earth before - it will be now. Sounds like just punishment for yelling fire in a crowded room.

The only creatures spreading havoc on our planet - are humans, you know, God's little creation...lol.

I love how the article points to 9-11, heck, there is a 9-11 every day for many citizens of the planet - Americans are such wusses.

Religion and Government brainwashing go hand in hand. All one has to realize to understand that is laws protect people from Internet fraud, mail fraud and con artists schemes of every sort. Everything that is, except religion.

It's a simple equation really. Governments like to keep a large number of their constituent population duped. It's easier and much cheaper to get the sheep (They're not called a flock of nothing.) to do stupid things for them if they accept that their reward will come in the hereafter. (Case example: virgins in heaven?)

I have been raised a Christian my entire life, and have studied the Word for most of it. I accepted Christ at the age 6... and even at that age I could guaranty that this Camping is completely lost (or has completely lost it)... there are verses that irrefutably explain that we CANNOT know the day or time of the end...

It is pathetic how greedy and power-hungry some of these evangelical programs have become. To wait for the rapture is entirely missing the point of God's Word and message...

You are correct my dear friend. Religion is the truly a scam specially when you have Charles Darwin as your preacher! His followers not only have stripped society of its ability to think coherently and logically but it is threatening to become a major fuel for the next "Holy War". A little bit of introspection and everyone in this planet will find themselves chasing after a religion. That includes atheists, agnostics and their cousins. I wonder why? Uhmm...Why do we have this enchantment with metaphysics? Yes, lets get rid of religion but of ALL religions. Perhpas then we will realize our folly. "The fool says in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good". This includes you and me my dear friend!

I am so disappointed with this entire situation. All of this wasted time, energy and resources - I doubt that people giving money to this man had any disillusions as what they were giving their money to. I heard this morning about a man who believes this crazy radio guy, and gave him his entrie life savings of over $100,000.00 USD to advertise Saturday's so called events.

The sad thing is that this man is making the rest of us believers, who actually have a relationship with Christ and just want to see his love shared across the world, look like a bunch of loonies. I hate that, that old addage, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch, actually rings true in cases like this.

Please don't judge all christians for the looney ideas of one crazy person who has so completely deceived not only themself but several other thousands around him. If only this man had taken his passion and redirected it to something more powerful like sharing the Love of Jesus instead of his "impending doom".

The bible is very clear that NO ONE, not even the angels that surround the throne room of God, will know the time or the hour and to run and flee from the "false prophets" who claim to know when Jesus is to actually return.

Kim, Mickey & terry,

Just FYI, Billboards are not paid for out of government spending. The Church or party that wants to advertise pays for it. The taxpayers do not pay for it. Please lets look things up, before jumping on the anti_christian band wagon just because everyone else is doing it.

There are always going to be groups that take advantage of people that are not secure in their beliefs. That is what this is. Get someone to give up their life savings because the world is going to end, Is an old scam as old as time.

I don't think this is a scam...it's just a mistake. As for people donating to the cause, well don't you feel good when you think that the gift is going to a good purpose? It's not as if family radio and its CEO's are staging the Earthquake, they are just predicitng it. I don't agree with Mr. Camping's calculations and some of his other statements I've heard from him in the past, but I think there are those who really do follow him, his ideas and predictions. It may be a shame but probably not a sham.

And I have been reading a lot of comments here and elsewhere, puzzled by the enormous amount of anger and projection to others who have simply made a decision and choice to follow it. Let's be gracious to people...let them have their freedom...and let's each apply ourselves to insuring our own(peaceably) shall we? Maybe we won't be destroyed in a few hours, but you have to admit that life is short enough anyway, right? I appreciate thoughtful feedback, it helps me sort things out too. Hey, if half you guys don't get a chance to read this because you're gone ( I mean really gone)well...I was gonna ask you pray for me...but you're not reading this...:(

    #1.12 - Fri May 20, 2011 11:39 PM EDT

rbjk; you actually reinforced my comments - your emotional outburst is exactly the type of wuss response that has become the norm, for Americans. Kids in Iraq live a 9-11 life, every day of their life, and yet they still don't act like victims. 9-11 made the USA a country of victims - get over it, show some resolve, stop buying into the fear - it has gotten very old and stale - the whole pride thing is a joke - there is a reason PRIDE in number one on the 7 Deadliest Sins list. Your "badmouthing" comment makes no sense - put it in a context that gives it meaning - form a rhetorical argument...resorting to BOLD type ranting is a sign of childishness.

Americans need to return to balanced lives - this emotional stuff is exactly what allows con preachers to get away with these scams - get a grip people.

What scares the hell out of me are comments made by Harold Camping, during a recent interview. The interviewer asked something to the effect of "When Sunday the 22nd rolls around and you're still here, may we interview you?", to which Camping said rather assuredly "Oh, I won't be here to give an interview". What if he is planning a Jonestown sort of exit, rather than lose face with the rest of society? Now please don't get me wrong folks. I'm NOT saying that this will happen. Perhaps that's the most distant thing from their minds. Hopefully he and his followers will just simply say "Oops! We miscalculated again!", and that will be the end of it (until the NEXT time they come up with tis hype!). This doesn't mean that these people are "unattractive", or "mentally defective". Some are university grads with degrees. I've seen a few that could pose as models in magazines. The thing is they're not unlike us........they, like we are human beings. They just have a distorted point of view that the rest of us fail to share is all.

No it doesn't tell us that we are in the end days. The temple must be rebuilt in Jerusalem first. Animal sacrifice must be restored and the ashes of the red heifer must be incorporated into that sacrifice. The continuation of the ashes were contained in the Ark of the Covenant which to this date as far as I know has not been discovered.

If they aren't minding their own business, why should we? I think we have the right to respond. It is wrong for people to be insulting (and that includes you), but they do have the right to share their opinions -- just as much as you.

Larry, your use of vulgar language does absolutely nothing but render your statements ineffective and, quite frankly, disturbing coming from someone who, clearly, considers himself a believer. I am a believer, but I know that no amount of verbal abuse is going to persuade a non-believer to listen to me or consider me as anything other than a poser. Check the hostility and understand it hurts you more than it hurts them. Peace be with you.

As even Jesus couldn't tell the disciples when the exact time was.....as long as there are people lining up in stadiums, staring up into the sky, and generally waiting for God to zap them....I figure, I can safely go about my business...."like a thief in the night" I believe are the actual words of Jesus....What I found most distressing in all the articles and blogs about this non-event, was the family, supposedly torn apart. Parents believing fully in this prohpecy and the children, not. As I understand it, the mother was quoted as telling her children that they were not to be saved, and when interviewed and asked how she felt about this fact, she merely said that she had to accept the "Will of God" Seeing as how God was really specific about the role of parents and family in the general scheme of things, how do you have children who do not believe as you do? How can you just except that your children are to be consigned to hellfire and damnation while you go off in rapturous bliss? Where in any Bible does God specify and actual number of people to be saved? I thought the whole point was to "Go ye therefore and teach all nations..." That doesn't sound really very finite to me. But the attitude of that mother-Wow, ......poor kids.

I am a Born Again Christian, for those people who don't read the Bible, or believe, or just are Christians but don't read or understand the Bible, it says in the Bible , "That no man knoweth the day, the time nor the hour when the world will end". I will wager any amount of money that the Rapture will not happen on May 21, 2011. I know that the Rapture will happen, but as the Bible says, no body knows the exact time it will happen. This so called preacher is a charlaton, a fake, a complete boob! He gives a bad name to "Real Christians" that believe in the Rapture. I cannot say when it will happen, and if I did know, then I too would be a liar. Only God knows when it will happen, it says that in the Bible, that only "GOD" knows when it will happen. Don't believe me? Read your Bible! Don't believe me? I really don't care. I only care what My God, My Lord, My Saviour Jesus Christ says. And he says all must be saved, that is the ONLY way into Heaven. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.

Also in Romans 10:9,10,11 says, 9"That if thou (you) shalt confess with thy (your) mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine (your) heart that GOD hath raised him (Jesus) from the dead, thou (you) shalt be saved.

10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

All that matters is that YOU, any person gets SAVED! You don't have to believe in any religion, or go to any certain church, it doesn't even matter if you give one dime to any church or religion. All that matters is that YOU get SAVED! When the RAPTURE does happen, then all the SAVED PEOPLE will be taken off this Earth , and taken to HEAVEN, or as some people call it PARADISE.

If you don't believe me, that is OK, you believe what you want. I believe what the Bible says, and GOD gives everyone the CHOICE to believe or not believe. I won't put you down for your beliefs, so don't put me down for my beliefs.

One thing I know for certain is that this Saturday, May 21, 2011 is NOT THE RAPTURE!!

                            READ YOUR BIBLE!!!

In my Bible, Jesus tells his disciples at the Mount of Olives in Matthew 24, v33 and 34:

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.
34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

So he seems to be telling them that they will see the second coming. They didn't.

Catzenjammer.... I had relatives that were on the Mount of Olives that day. They were busy eating the olives. They said that it made more sense than trying to hear what was being said by Jesus. They said he didn't even have a megaphone.

So, if you told everyone that the Rapture was happening today, then the Rapture would never happen. But if did that, you'd then prove god wrong. Because if the Rapture never comes, god was wrong.

Catzenjammer, if you want to quote the Bible, that's fine; just be sure you know what you're talking about and have a valid argument. In this case, you have not done your homework. So many people make the mistake of singling out a verse or two and twist them to fit their meaning. You have to read the entire chapter, the verses around it, to understand what Jesus meant.

In the case of the verse you mentioned, the disciples had asked Jesus when the end would be, and He was explaining the signs and prophecies that would happen before Jesus' return. When He said "this generation shall not pass away," He was talking about the generation who saw those prophecies fulfilled--not the disciples.

Again, if you want to quote the Bible, that's great. However, you best be sure to know what you're talking about. I encourage you to read it, to study it, because contrary to popular belief, it is irrefutable and timeless.

Hmm, did we then waste bullets on Osama Bin-Laden, 3 trillion dollars, and the lives of our military personnel? So, I guess Osama bin-Laden will be raised up on Saturday for the judgement!

the rapture can happen anytime.all of the things that most see as the end of time does not have anything to do with the rapture,it has to do with the second coming of jesus with his saints.

No.only the ones who read and believe will know and the ones who are fooled by this guy will be mislead.

That is a logical facilly. Simply because the Rapture didnt happen on one particular day doesnt mean it never will. Thats like saying "see, I heated wter to 90 C and it didnt boil. Therefore, it never will".

god does exist, you and everything everywhere around you is certainly proof of that. what the majority of mankind doesnt realize or have not cared to read or investigate in the bible is our begining.. man and woman were created to care for the earth, there was certain guidance given them by our creator that they disobeyed because of a angel son of god who worked hard to mislead them and they were mislead so here we are in this mortal life while a point is proven. and as gracious as god is he gave the angel son who mislead man to prove that mankind could rule themselves without gods guidance, so obviously the angel son has failed we cannot live without god's love or help. so here mankind is but there is hope through gods first son jesus christ who he sent forth many many years ago to see if mankind has any hope. and he found good people left and truly gave his life for adam's sin the first man for a perpetual sacrifice that anyone that approach's the father through his name may have forgiveness and everlasting life.. so look around yourself and in everything deeply read gods word as you would any book or manual when you have questions, because they are there the guide to life that our creator so graciously provided for us. thanks for your comments and please do consider this writing and pray for the truth.

I really am not believing any of this garb! I do believe in God, Jesus and The Holy Trinity, but I don't think a human being has any info on what The Almighty is planning. We're not supposed to.

Only God knows the day, the hour and the very second the world will end!

So, don't be afraid anyone. It happens every so often that some nut case has the "inside scoop" on the Rapture that no one else knows.

This guy predicted the same thing in 1994! Funny, how we are all still here commenting when we should have been dusted then. Wonder what he's going to say on Sunday?????Hmmmmm????

Preachers are having "believers" sign over their property and savings? It is disturbing that people are SOOOO! STUPID! as to believe utter nonsense! God--GROW UP!

WHAT IF --excuse me, but most non believers DO NONE of the things you mentioned.

First of all if the end of the world occurs tomorrow (and it won't), you won't care about it anyway will you because you will be moved on to another realm won't you. So who cares?
