All quiet on the Rapture front

A prediction that the world will end at supper time on May 21 has some trying to warn others about "the end." NBC's Kerry Sanders reports on what believers and skeptics think about the prophecy.

In some parts of the world, it's already Sunday — and there hasn't been any sign that the end of the world was starting as predicted. But you already knew that'd be the way it went down, didn't you?

For years, Family Radio preacher Harold Camping has been telling his flock that the Rapture would gather up 200 million Christian believers to heaven and kick off five months of tribulation for the rest of us, heralded by a massive earthquake. Can you imagine the panic that might ensue if a significant quake actually did strike today? There's always a chance of that, of course. But as it turns out, the day has been relatively quiet in seismic terms.

Readings from the U.S. Geological Survey have turned up only a few quakes worthy of any note around the world, and nothing anywhere near major. If you check the USGS' chart of seismic activity, the blue squares denote quakes that have occurred over the past 24 hours, and the red squares stand for tremors in the past hour. The size of the square represents how big the quake was ... and there are no big squares.

USGS

This chart from the U.S. Geological Survey traces earthquakes stronger than magnitude 4.5 throughout the world over the past week, as of 11 a.m. ET Saturday. Yellow squares denote quakes up to a week ago, blue squares denote quakes up to a day ago, and red squares are quakes in the previous hour. The strongest quakes have been slightly higher than 5 in magnitude, which is in the normal range for those regions.

There's no word yet from Camping, and his followers are likely still hunkered down wondering if the end will come. But other folks are starting to go about their business, which is a good thing.

On the Cosmic Log Facebook page, correspondents around the world are voicing a sense of relief. One woman writes, "Jesus Himself said that no one would know the day or hour, but only His Father in Heaven. Besides, I'm getting married today at 3:00."

Best wishes to the bride ... and to all of you.

A passenger jeep on a street in Manila, the Philippine capital, drives past a banner that reads "Judgment Day 21 May 2011." The day passed without incident in the Pacific.

Update for 7:30 p.m. ET: A couple of fairly significant seismic events were recorded later in the day, including a 5.8 quake in Japan and a 5.8 quake in New Zealand's Kermadec Islands. These happened to occur on Sunday as reckoned by local time, and on Saturday according to GMT. None of the events could be called Rapture-worthy unless Camping and his followers end up grasping at straws.

More about the Rapture rumblings:

Even though Saturday is already finished with in some parts of the world, I'll still be blogging about the Rapture hype until the day is totally finished, and probably even longer. I don't know about the end of the world, but I think the end of the stock market bubble is coming.

Ya know...as glad as I am that this ridiculous debacle is over, I wish I could say something in person to this guy (as well as the heaviest of his followers). I really didn't appreciate the fact that my six year old was asking me "Mommy, why does that big sign say the world is going to end?" For these people to have believed this so strongly based on CRAP is a truly pathetic thing!

jenlee,

camping got paid and has a radio network etc., l. ron hubbard wrote science fiction books and parlayed that into a new religion with lots of money, joseph smith jr. occupation grave robber, pulled the wool over the eyes of enough early christians that todays mormon church could possibly give us our next president.

we humans are very very gullible.

Woke up with my cat not in her usual spot next to me. For a brief moment I thought the Rapture got her, then I rolled over and she bit me. Now I'm not worried, pretty sure she came from hell and will eventually return back there.

Jenlee,

To continue your line of thought.

Everyone has seen the footage. Stupid banners in Manila, Rome, South America...

If you were pro Muslim and you lived in the Philippines, which has some Muslim unrest now, you would be praising Allah for this opportunity to turn public sentiment against Christians.

The residual harm this hack has caused will be felt for some time and it was all caused by some gullible Christians and their checkbooks.

Just like we condemn the Muslim community for speaking out against their extremists, we did not hear enough condemnation of this from the heads of the Christian, Catholic, or Jewish, communities.

    Hello all,

Well it is Saturday May 12th and we are still here. Look before I start commenting on the allegations of that guy, I am by no means being judgeful in any way. I don't know where his heart stands but I can take a min. to tell you all what the bible teaches us. It never says or gives any day that the world will end or by how. Gods word tells me to be watching and waiting and then again if the watchman knew what hour the thief was coming he would be waiting on him when he walked through the door. Jesus said himself that he is coming back in the hr you think not. Jesus again said He didnt know when he was coming back but One knows and that is the Father of it all, God himself and God is the only One that knows that. Another thing about it folks, is if you follow man, you will always get led in the wrong direction....Would everyone agree that is a true statement? God does give us some signs and stuff to be looking out for, but I wont get into that. If ya need to know just read the Holy Bible and it will be explained to ya. Jesus tells us in the Bible that in the last days, many people will come in his name saying that he is here or there and Jesus tells us not to go, for it is a lie. Also the bible says many false prophets and teachers would arise but not listen to them for these things must come to past. Lastly the bible tells us that we could believe a lie and be "damned" in it....so main thing is not to listen to man but rather trust in God and let him guide lead and direct your footsteps. Thanks for your alls time.

    Dustin

Please, please personally apologize to all of the little children involved in this tragic deception for me. Imagine you're 3yrs, 5yrs, 10yrs or teen again, and Mom or Dad believe that soon everything and everyone you know will be gone.

    1. How will parents make up for the senseless loss of happiness and security to these children? Words cannot express how I feel for all of the young ones who relied upon others to protect them.

    2. Will there be an investigation into Harold Camping and whether he gained financially by inflicting pain and suffering on possibly tens of thousands of people?

You freaks will believe anything. You all read a book of old stories from ancient civilizations, profess to know everything about beings more advanced than us, and try to tell everyone what will happpen after this life. None of which you personnally have any proof or firsthand knowledge WHATSOEVER! Then one guy says the world will end and only certain people will be chosen to fly up in the sky and you believe that too! What a bunch of freaking idiots. Religion is people arguing over things they will never know until they die so WHAT'S THE POINT! Here's a couple of pointers, if you fly up in the sky there's no air up there you will suffocate. We have the most powerfull telescopes to see up to the beginning of our universe and there is no "heaven", just stars and planets and cosmic stuff. We need to try and move forward with our discoveries we are making about what and who we are, not spin our wheels in ideas created thousands of years ago when we we even stupider than we are now!!!! ((If that is indeed possible). ARRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!

    Really is amazing,

We get all worked up over a fantasy that means nothing, but Dick Cheney's fantasy weapons of mass destruction?

If these people deny that this is really the date and pretend for the next 10 years that they only got the date wrong, are they any different the the US still having troops in Iraq over weapons that were as much a fantasy as this is?

A teenaged girl that is staying with my grandaughter hear me talk about this in just yesterday, and was so frightened she said she wanted to take her own life rather than face this BS deal dreamed up by this moron and swindler radio preacher. I GUARENTEE this, if she had, out of fear had indeed have carried out het threat(she didnt, we took her to Pirates of the Carribian instead) I would press for murder charges against this fool of fools! It would be laughable, except sooo many people fall for these charlitins and fakes(all religions, ALL not just one) and if all this blather and BS were turned to something CONSTRUCTIVE instead of distruction, there would be no poor desperate people( ok, a few) the world would be a much nicer place..

Come on. Have a laugh. I mean anyone who believes this stuff doesn't have both oars in the water anyway.

Just in case you missed it I AM making fun of religion.

For all of you whose children were scared, I'm sorry. If we didn't encourage this kind of delusion as a society there would be many children who were safer, not the least of which have had encounters with priests. I won't even get into the damage the church does to children in the name of 'sin'.

I've been reading all these comments and they are very interesting. America is a wonderful place and I'm so glad it is my country, a country where everyone has the freedom to express their opinions. It is a shame that children exposed to this may have been frightened and I pray they were comforted. To blame religion as a whole as being wrong is not the answer though. Faith in God is not a bad thing. It's when people use it badly that is hurtful. A hammer can build a house but if used in the wrong fashion it can beat a person to death. It is the person who is wrong...not the instrument and if a person really believes in God then they should not spread fear, anger, bigotry etc. Please don't judge all christians by one man and his followers who are misquided by the arrogance that they know the mind of God. No one does...one can only live by His word which is to harm no one and help each other. I feel sad for these people and I hope they give up trying to second guess God.

Well said Mary! I am a believer, and only became aware of another false prophet making another prediction when I logged onto my computer Friday night. Read a few of the postings, posted mine to not believe in this Man, that only God knows the date and time. This person was a man out to make a profit, or maybe just a little nuts and wanting attention. Then off to sleep, with the Boxer snoring on the floor, and Cats crash out at the end of the Bed. No sleep lost. Next day they all wanted Breakfast bright and early.

As to the party saying we have seen far out into the Universe, and there is no heaven...........doesn't science say that we have only seen a 1 or 2% of our Universe, heck we haven't even seen all of our Oceans. But you believe what you want, and I will believe what I want. Enough Said.

      ___________________________________________________________________________

How about we all change the subject to why Obama was able to spend more in a few years than all the Presidents before-combined! I know I am a little bad with my charges but really! I know he said he wanted to Change America, but into what - land of the very few Rich and the Poor?. Bush did not start all of this, it was someone wanting to make money, and made it so someone on minimum wage could not be disqualified for a $500K house, and made them believe they could afford a $2500 mortgage. The banks were not discriminating when they denied this person before, they were thinking of the person. Now these people are ruined for life, and the rest of us are paying for it with higher interest charges, bank fees and state budgets looking to raise our taxes. And wasn't the person who said the Banks could not discriminate, the same person appointed to one of Obama's cabinets, after they made billions after starting all of this? Wouldn't we balance the budget, Social Security and Medicare, if our elected officials in Washington had to depend on the same retirement we get, when they retired? Come on Trump, please run, as even your wealth can take another 4 years of what we have now.

Ok if Politics does not work at getting you all to focus on todays problems, whether you believe or don't believe. How about Gas Prices? Obama says no more drilling, escuse me, but Oil is a renewable source, and if we don't pump it out and use it, it won't renew itself. We don't have to drill in the Oceans, it right under us, and we have come along way from the old oil rigs. Electric cars, get real, our area has faced mandatory black outs due to Electricity consume every Summer for the past 4 or 5 years. And that was before the Electric cars became popular.

Guess I was so wrapped up in other issues facing all of us, Christian and Non-Believer, I missed all the pre-rapture hoopla. I say lets call it done with, and focus on the real problems facing all of us.

        #1.20 - Sun May 22, 2011 3:58 AM EDT

Boxer Mom, you're using this sad moment to make misinformed political points. In reality:

        1. President Bush signed TARP in September 2008 at the end of his presidency to stop US Banks from failing. Four million jobs had been lost and another four million lost at the beginning of 2009.

        2. The Bush tax cuts added $1 Trillion to our deficit, did not create jobs and helped cause a near-economic collapse. Understand clearly that GOP wants to renew those tax cuts again, right now even as our economy is recovering. Their number one priority is to hand over another bonus $700 billion to their corporate benefactors. Republican Senators keep demonstrating and loudly, that they're willing to shut down the government if they don't get everything they want.

        3. Since President Obama took office we have gone from minus 6 GDP to steady growth over the last five quarters. In the last 14 months alone, 2 million private sector jobs were created.

We must continue to meet energy challenges, transition to new green technologies, repatriate jobs, develop high tech manufacturing and educate our children to compete in a global economy.

fyi, Oil is a non-renewable energy source. It takes millions of years for this material to develop from fossilized organic vegetation. America has only 2%, but uses 25% of the world's oil. Oil production is peaking worldwide and is on the downslide. That is why the global race is on to develop other sources of energy and asap.

I really don't think this is "typical" of Christians, just typical of the ones making the news. It is certainly not typical of Christ who said we cannot know the day or the hour of His return, and who lovingly gave of Himself. Further, He is not willing that any should perish (die a death without Him). Wishing you the best, Forest Roamer!

Excuse me, but not all Christians believe that today is the day of rapture. Harold Camping and his followers are lost Christians who are giving a bad reputation to the rest of us Christians who don't believe that today is the apocalypse.

Oh, and another thing, I don't wish suffering on anyone. I'd never wish that on anyone to prove a point, or for anything, for that matter. So, please stop stereotyping people. Try giving people the benefit of the doubt.

        Have a nice tomorrow!

Not going to say "whoops" - No need to calculate - The exact time will not be known - even to Jesus himself - so said Jesus in the New Testament...

This generation has seen predictions made 2000 years ago in the book of Revelation start to come true... "what used to be described as just "stories" or allegories are starting to literally become real.

One world government - unified currencies - the capability to track individuals - the ability to transmit images around the globe in real-time - the ability to genetically create an extinct bovine (the red heffer) for ritualistic sacrifices - the nation of Israel being brought together again (1948 under U.N. mandate).

Just stories 100 years ago - not possible, but today are fact.... Currencies are starting to unite, We have the UN to help run the world (if we could just stop squabbling) - CNN Headline news and the internet - Israel - and genetic manipulation and genome mapping...

SO in the immortal words of "Bill and Ted" - "Be excellent to each other, and party on Dudes!"

BY the way, I expect to be here tomorrow - drinking a beer, mowing the lawn, reading the news on the internet, doing laundry - you know, the usual stuff we Christians do when we are not out telling people "the End is near - Repent."

Read Revelation - In fact read the bible and try to disprove Jesus as the Christ (Christ was not his last name - It was a job title)... he fulfilled all the prophecies written when he was here - the last prophecy was written some 600 years before his birth. The odds of that happening to one individual are astronomical.

        So good luck forrest

Forest Roamer, please don't count that old man as a mainstream christian because he is not. While us mainstream christians believe in the rapture, the Bible doesn't say exactly when it will happen, but the actual timeline of events is as follows:

        1) Christ will appear in the air to gather up his followers, first those that have already died and then those followers that are living. (This is the rapture)

        2) There will be 7 years of Tribulation following the rapture

        3) The Tribulation period will end with the battle of armageddon

        4) after armageddon Christ will return to rule Earth for 1000 years in which there will be peace and prosperity like this planet has never seen before

        5) Judgement Day, this is when God destroys The Earth and all those that were left behind the rapture get Judged of which there are 2, The Judgement of the Just which all the righteous that died before Christ came the first time and then Judgement of the unjust in which all the evil and nonbelievers will be Judged to determine the severity of their eternal punishment.

And by the way like stated by other christians posting here, we do not want anything bad to anyone.

Only Harold Camping and his flock of misinformed followers were buying into this. So please don't think that all or even most Christians believed Camping and trusted him, because we didn't.

        Matthew 24
23 At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. 36 But about that day or hour (Jesus' return) no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 42 Keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Much to the chagrin of the majority of my friends (most of them would say they are "enlightened" friends), I do believe this (that we are indeed living in the time described in the Bible as the time of His return). But the Christianity I practice is not the same twisted kind of belief system that you think it is and it is disturbing to see what some of you actually purport it to be (just read some of these comments in this forum and you can see the "hate" described in verse 12 below). It saddens me to see people who do this - make such ridiculous predictions – even when the Bible tells you it's foolish to try – because it helps foster the image that many of you have of Christians (like the nut job in Florida who burned a Koran). That's just plain inflammatory and stupid and THAT kind of hate does not represent MY kind of Christianity).

Just a bit more from Matthew 24, if you will allow me:

9 …you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

The only prophecy coming true today so far are the ones of you who are using this to spew out hate for Christians. See?? God is using even you...

I am Christian and I am not judging but these people need to re-read their Bibles! Even non-chrisitians know that God is the only being that knows when this world will end. Look at the beautiful verse from Mountaineer67 in Matthew 24!! I also was "tortured" by my parents when I was 8 years old (now 29) that the world was ending. I was so afraid I asked if we could build a house underneath the ground and just hide out until Jesus comes back (haha). I am totally sick of thinking about the end of the world. You know some people are happy and want to live a fullfilling life and have children, etc. I love Jesus and just because I want to live a great life doesn't make me a bad person. So when whoever these "CHRISTIANS" are definitely doesn't account for the true believers and followers of Christ. I still believe that God only knows the day and time. But Great for Camping he is sitting on 70 million dollars...wish I came up with this story before him! I could really use the money to start a family haha!!!

Our jobs as Christians are also not to be right and have the last laugh! Our jobs are to lead people to Christ and show them the Light! We are not ready to sit back and say see you non-christian we told you so! When someone denies Christ I'm sure we all feel a sense of loss, disappointment, and deep sadness just like Christ! If you haven't tried out Jesus or know him at least try!

Their are real legit christians. Then their are crack pots. The whole point of the rapture is you better be good all the time or you will be left here. Not just before some date on a calander. And for that matter if we even show any hope of getting our act together it will never happen. Its basicaly god doing a redo with those he thinks are salvageble. Many think WW1 and 2 were close calls. You can always stop it.If you change directions.Next year is the big one.Nat saying rapture but we sure are going to get some wicked solar flares acc to space adm.Wouldnt want to be on anything computer controlled.Last time it was that bad it took out the telegraph lines.Imagine what a nasty flare can do to a jet or computer chip.Dont expct a rapture or anything like that. But when the plains start falling from the skies i bet the churches will suddenly be full.Just one heck of a wake up call.Reminding us we dont control everything.

"Typical Christians" do not, and cannot claim to know the end of times as the Bible details nobody knows the time or day. Please don't lump us in with these nut cases that claim to know all and make predictions just to bring attention to themselves and their way of belief. Hoping and praying for us all in these crazy times.

So as I read it the "one" who stands firm will be saved. Not much of a chance when only the"one" who stands firm will be saved. Soddom and Gemmorah would have been saved if but "one" good man could have been found. Maybe it's just that our creator is still waiting for the "one".

what exactly is a typical christian? the snake handlers , who believe in order to prove that you are a true christian you must be able to pickup a poisonous snake without being bitten? pentecostal who believe you must be able to speak in tongues? who is right, should i ask god? what if he doesn't answer? its funny, different christians use different verses from different versions of the bible to prove their beliefs. but if you read the bible you learn how contradictory it is. jesus was not only the product of an adlterous relationship, but an insestuous one as well. that jesus could not have been the son of god and been the chosen one as well. and if he was the son of god does that mean his twin brother was too?

              Forest Roamer,

I openly admit that I'm not a devout Christian. Although I was raised Catholic, I haven't been a "true believer" since I was a child. And a very young one at that. However, over the years I've come to realize that regardless of how I feel about Christianity, or religion in general for that matter, there really are some people out there that actually try to live up to the Christian ideal. Of course there will always be no shortage of charlatans ready to take advantage of the gullible , the aged, etc. But in my opinion, there are also some people out there whose faith is genuine, and who actually try to practice what they preach. The "Mother Teresa's" of the world, so to speak. So I myself would never go as far as to lump all those who call themselves Christians, into one category. What I would do is, perhaps join you in condemning those who would take advantage of the naive in our society.

Now, as far as trying to explain why the world didn't end today after all? Well, you might be right. They may simply try to say that they miscalculated the date. However, they may also try to take credit for having "saved" the world, thanks to Mr. Camp's intervening on our behalf, and using his personal clout with God to postpone the event. I wouldn't put it past them.

So, anybody else out there feel like listening to Blondie's "Rapture", today?

                #4.17 - Sat May 21, 2011 4:19 PM EDT

Typical Christians don't want to see people suffer or go to hell anymore than typical Muslims would want to blow up a building. There are radicals in all parts of humanity so don't generalize or you just look like a hateful fool.

                  #4.18 - Sat May 21, 2011 4:41 PM EDT

The Christians don't need Harold Camping to give them a bad name. They've been doing just fine for themselves for many centuries. As two small examples we have The Crusades and The Inquisition.

@junkhunter - "Their are real legit christians. Then their are crack pots. The whole point of the rapture is you better be good all the time or you will be left here"

Um, gotta disagree. The point of Christianity is that God loves us so much he was willing to suffer and die to heal his relationship with us, even though we aren't good all the time. We're supposed to love God and our neighbors (i.e. everyone). We're supposed to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and imprisoned. God would undoubtedly enjoy it if we were "good all the time", but he knows we just can't manage it, and he loves us anyway.

Yes I voted for Bush. And yes I am a Christian too. And no I do not judge what others do, I leave that to God. And NO I wasn't expecting a rapture or second coming. And if offered Kool-aid I would not be drinking. All beliefs, or views have at least a few individuals or groups that have to make a mockery of it. But thank heavens, some people and groups see past that, otherwise we would probably all still be in England, or Spain or the Holy Lands, as Columbus might have thought, could they all be right, and the world is flat.

The CIA and the Seals got Osama (after years of intelligence gathering that started before anyone outside of Chicago ever heard the name Obama). Obama was in a comfy seat and authorized the invasion. Nothing more, and nothing less.

Don't you know a hoax when you see one. How many times has a top secret stealth helicopter landed in enemy territory? Duh! Seals ALWAYS are lowered to the area and then repel out! This killing osama thing is as fake as those pictures they showed us of his body... oh yeah they DIDN't show us any pictures. The so called burial at sea- according to muslim ritual? There isn't any muslim ritual that includes burial at sea. Convenient timing when obama was at the lowest approval rating of his term AND he is gearing up to run again.

As for the rapture- yeah right- not happening and not biblically based!

Ah, another conspiracy theorist. Having been trained as a military helicopter pilot (USMC, Oooragh!), I can tell you that sometimes helicopters DO land in enemy territory in order to load or unload items, such as the dead or wounded or heavy equipment. Remember, this helicopter developed mechanical trouble and was probably forced to land in order to sort out the problem. And remember, it was the news media who made the report, and they're known for not getting their facts straight.

As for the Rapture, it IS Biblically based. It is foretold and described in Matthew 24:30-31,Mark 13:26-27, 1st Thessalonians 4:15-17. The word Rapture is not used in the Bible, but the event that we refer to as the Rapture is discussed in the Bible. The Bible also states that no one will know the day or time of this event (Mattthew 24:36), which is where Harold Camping has made a mistake.

Everyone needs to read Matthew 24:35-44 (I could list several other Bible references on the Rapture too). It will happen someday, but NO ONE can predict when. This Harold Camping is nothing more than a false prophet.

How very say and people have given up their livelihoods and a little boy who was murdered because of this insane old man. He joins the ranks of people like Jim Jones, David coresch and the Heaven's Gate followers so now they can add Harold camping to this list. The Bible says not to believe every inspired utterance but search the Scriptures to see what is true. So now another false prophet has been heard and will soon go off into oblivion

The Bible itself is provably false, so don't bother looking in there for your answers.

As for Jesus' statement about even him not knowing... why don't Christians think critically and question this nonsense? Jesus said that the time of his return is not known to anyone, even himself; indeed, that only the "Father" knows. Why don't Christians see the obvious paradox? Jesus Christ IS, himself, "the Father" -- he is (theoretically) GOD incarnate. So how is it that he doesn't know? Is he lying? Is he purposely trying to confuse his sheep? Is he keeping a secret from himself?

Religious people are so freaking delusional.

because for 33 years he was here in the flesh,( man and God ) man was not to know so He couldn't know.

Chad, Jesus is a Deity, God The Father, God The Son , God The Holly Spirit.

                                                  Definition of DEITY

                                                  1
a : the rank or essential nature of a god : divinity b capitalized : god 1, supreme being

                                                  2
: a god or goddess <the deities of ancient Greece>

                                                  3
: one exalted or revered as supremely good or powerful

                                                  Examples of DEITY

                                                  1. <to the ancient Greeks, Zeus was the deity who ruled over the sky and weather, and Poseidon was god of the sea>

Chad, that theory wasn't developed until about 400 years after jesus death as a compromise when two different groups of chirstians merged. one believing in one god the other three. and thus the trinity was born.

                                                      #17.5 - Sat May 21, 2011 4:29 PM EDT

I grew up as a Christian (and later came to my senses), so I definitely know about the "trinity." My point is, it makes no sense. If God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all one and the same, how could one know something that the other doesn't?

The answer is: It's all fictional. Man just made it up. God is imaginary. Jesus, if he existed, was just an ordinary man, and nobody can really explain the "holy spirit" adequately.

And thanks so much for the definition of "deity" there, Tony. Mankind has invented thousands of them throughout history to explain what they didn't understand and to cope with their inherent fear of death. The god of the Bible is no different... it's just as imaginary and made-up as Aztec gods, Roman gods, or Egyptian gods.

Sorry, my Christian friends... gotta do better than that. :)

                                                      chad,

i agree with most of what you are saying Chad, especially when it comes to the New Testament. but i also think there are some truths in the bible as well. The flood did happen, not noah's global flood. but, that melting ice had to go some where at the end of the last ice age. jesus was not the son of god, that wasn't suggested til at about the same time as the trinity. if he existed, he would have been married by the time he was thirty and probably had kids as well. he did not walk on water but ice, as was recently pointed out by a climatologist (before he stared receiving the death threats from christians). turning water into wine was the litmus test of a god according to the pagan faithful. maybe that is why it was added at a time when christians were trying to become the dominate religion. who knows? but, as you pointed out, he was just a man if he existed.

But Jesus IS the Father. How can he not know? They're the same entity according to Christian fiction. Jesus is supposed to be God incarnate.

However, I've no doubt that Christians will have invented some sort of nonsensical rationalization for this, as they do for every incongruence in the Bible (of which there are scores).

Living in fear of satan and some sort of punishment by "god" instead of living each day to the fullest and loving those around you with all your being is a sad way to exist.

He thrives on this sort of stuff and as he has gotten older his scriptural teachings are rather extreme at that. Yes, I would welcome Jesus Christ coming back because I am saved. But scripture teaches that no man know except God. Plus we interpret current events throuh human eyes and human understanding. Perhaps I would say more misunderstanding. God has already taken every thing into account because he knows our thoughts, actions, and words days and years ahead of time. Plus God can read and know one's motives and their heart. Even modern medicine has not figured that one out yet. One thing I would say is it would be rather funny if Harold Camping would die today. Then at least family network would be more biblical based instead of Camping based.

The marvel is how he's been able to get so much traction with this ... I tried to delve into this in an earlier posting. Money certainly has something to do with it, as well as the fact that he's had a radio platform for so long.

Mark I agree with you, this guy would fall into the category of false profit and that is something that the Bible warns us about. Some of these posts clearly show how people pick and choose what to read in the Bible, and then want to quote just a part of it, and taken out of context can easily be twisted around to mean many things. The Bible is a book of whole truth, nothing but truth, not a book of short stories with some truth as some would read it ot be.

Even modern medicine has not figured that one out yet.

I even posted something similar to that last night. You sound so level headed with your post. God Bless and have a great day as I will......

I have preached and taught the Word of God for many years. Plus I try very hard to read the bible everyday. People like Camping will come and People like Camping will go. We need to stay grounded in the word of God!

Alan - I had an uncle who during his life made tens of millions of dollars lying and cheating his customers, soldiers just back from the war, etc, etc. When he died his family was expecting a big payday but his will was set up to give $2k to each son and grandson, $1500 to each daughter and granddaughter (even one who had a severe medical condition and required a lot of care), and every other penny went to a church he had never set foot in. No need for any pastor, preacher, or radio broadcast to convince him.

My point being, there are a LOT of people with guilty consciences looking for an easy way to be absolved. With or without a Mr. Camping. I imagine it didn't take much more than advertising that Heaven was selling admission tickets and the money started rolling in for him.

                                                                        #24.4 - Sat May 21, 2011 2:43 PM EDT

You are truly SICK individuals. Far sicker than the aholes who didn't sprout wings and flap into heaven. SHAME ON YOU!!!!
