What mystifies Dr. Hawking? Women

Physicist Stephen Hawking has decorated his office at the University of Cambridge with "Simpsons" memorabilia - and a prominent portrait of Marilyn Monroe.

As famed physicist Stephen Hawking turns 70, the subject that most occupies his thoughts is not how the universe arose from nothing, or how he's been able to live with neurodegenerative disease for so long. Here's what he thinks about most: "Women. They are a complete mystery."

That's the bottom line from New Scientist's interview with Hawking, timed to coincide with this weekend's birthday celebration at Cambridge. The theorist is almost completely paralyzed due to his decades-long struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, and had to provide his answers by laboriously twitching his cheek to operate a computerized speech-translation system.

Hawking also listed what he saw as his "biggest blunder in science" (his now-repudiated insistence that information was destroyed in black holes), the most exciting development in physics during his career (the discovery of the big bang's imprint in cosmic microwave radiation) and the potential discovery that would do the most to revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos (discovery of supersymmetric particles at the Large Hadron Collider).

But it's his brief comment on women that attracted the most attention: How could it be that a scientist who has plumbed the deepest mysteries of the cosmos finds himself mystified by women?

Based on the view most folks have of geniuses, how could it not be?

The saga of the super-smart professor who is flummoxed by interpersonal relations, particularly with the opposite sex, is at least as old as Sigmund Freud (who famously wondered, "What does a woman want?"), Jerry Lewis' fictional "Nutty Professor" and the stereotype we have of Albert Einstein. It's as up to date as the TV astrophysicist on "The Big Bang Theory" who can't say a word to women unless he's under the influence.

Somehow, folks get a satisfying sense of karma from the idea that geniuses are socially stupid. But the stereotype doesn't really hold true, particularly in Hawking's case.

Like the real-life Einstein, Hawking has had an active romantic life, marked by two marriages. (Einstein's second marriage ended with the death of his wife and cousin Elsa; Hawking's ended in an ugly divorce.) Hawking's disease does not affect his sexual ability or his potency, and the fact that he's fathered three children is evidence of that.

"The disease only affects voluntary muscle," Hawking's been quoted as saying.

He's been called an "incorrigible flirt" and a "party animal who likes to dance in his wheelchair." Having seen Hawking playfully chase his grandson around a backstage room in his wheelchair after a Seattle lecture, I can readily believe the "party animal" part. And having seen the way his expressive eyes light up a room, I know he can turn on the charm despite his disability.

Through the years, Hawking has had a special thing for Marilyn Monroe. A picture of the enigmatic blonde hangs in his Cambridge office, and Hawking once told The Guardian that if he could travel back in time, he'd rather meet Monroe than the great physicist Isaac Newton, who "seems to have been an unpleasant character."

Even as he approaches the age of 70, Hawking seems to have kept his playful, pleasant, mischievous character. That may help explain his latest comment about the mystique surrounding women, as well as his own mystique.

Here's a classic example: Actress Jane Fonda was clearly won over last year when Hawking came backstage after her performance in a play about a woman musicologist in the early stages of neurodegenerative disease. "I took his hand and carefully uncurled the fingers one by one, wanting to see how they felt and looked ... soft, pale, safe," she recalled in a blog posting.

When Fonda asked Hawking what he thought of her performance, Hawking typed out a short response: "You were my heartthrob" — which got a big laugh. Fonda came away starstruck. "This man who cannot move or speak, can, nonetheless, comprehend the incomprehensible," she wrote.

Hmm ... Maybe women aren't such a complete mystery to Hawking after all.

Where in the Cosmos?

This year we'll be experimenting with a Cosmic Log Facebook series called "Where in the Cosmos?" WITCo will offer pictures from cosmic locales and ask you to figure out where the pictures came from. But our first WITCo picture poses a slightly different challenge: In honor of Stephen Hawking's 70th birthday, the Science Museum has commissioned a series of pictures showing the physicist in his office, surrounded by knick-knacks and pictures. One of the pictures is at the top of this item. We've posted another picture to the Cosmic Log Facebook page, but we need your help to figure out what the knick-knacks are, what the pictures on Hawking's wall show, and what the equations on his blackboard refer to. Head on over to Facebook, "like" the Cosmic Log page, and help us solve the puzzle by adding your comments.

Hawking's birthday will be marked on Sunday at Cambridge University with a symposium on "The State of the Universe," featuring talks from 27 leading scientists, including Hawking himself. The public sessions on Sunday will be streamed live over the Internet. There's also a scientific symposium that got under way today. Those sessions, which continue on Friday and Saturday, are also being streamed.

Hawking retired from his post as a mathematics professor at Cambridge in 2009 and is now director of research at the university's Center for Theoretical Cosmology. He also holds a distinguished research chair at Canada's Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. I had no idea that he had ever married, so to see that he is still mystified by women after two wives leaves me completely stunned. At the same time, it makes me smile to think that a genius still cannot figure us out. Happy Birthday Dr. Hawking!

Happy Birthday Dr. Hawking! As a woman, I don't think I'm hard to understand. I am not mathematical, or science related. I do not think like a scientist. I think like a Mom who deals in stuff that is only made of emotions and love. Those things can't be measured by a scientist. I admire you and wish you the very best!

All you need to know is, how to make your girl happy. Find that out, and you're set for life. Just remember, women have the right to change their mind. Its their own version of Chaos theory.

Here are the 2 major problems with women

1> When they first meet a man and start dating if the woman wants to have a long term relationship or marry the man she will provide him with all the sex he needs in order to snag him. Then when they enter the relationship, move in together or get married the sex will be less and less frequent. I call this the bait and switch tactic. The vast majority of women do this. If the woman gives birth then the sex will greatly diminish. The reason is women know how important sex is to a man and women use sex as a bargaining chip.

2> Women want to change men. A woman will fall in love with a man the way he is or some women will fall in love with a man and his potential. Almost all women in some shape or form try and change a man.

As a woman, my opinion of your statement I would have to agree to be true. There are many women who wrongly abuse the power of the "P' for lack of a better term. And for that I am sorry, they give woman a bad wrap. I on the other hand, I would have to cite that there are men, who like women, act one way in hopes of snagging the woman they want and after they have them in a long term commitment or marriage change their ways as well. They become less affectionate, the flowers or cards they used to bring home stop or even just something as simple as starting up their girls car in the morning when it's freezing cold outside stop. I am in that kind of relationship. Dynamics of a relationship often change, but keep in mind, women aren't the only ones with their 'eye on the prize.' Good day!

It's all in the way women do their thing. They stop so the men stop. It's a 2 way street. If things didn't change things wouldn't change. Relationships are not a 1 way street, but women treat them that way. Then it's all about me. You have to give to get and that's both men and women.

Happy birthday Dr. Hawkings. We are the same age, and I have a few theories of my own. Women will never be "figured out" by men because men lack the ability to devote the time needed to the task of understanding us. We will always make sure of that!

Errol Flynn was also a very Charming and very bright man....but he paid way to much attention to women, who never get enough. Thus his life ended with nothing to show for it. Hawking gave us enough to wonder at for a lifetime, then quipped about the obvious, that women are mysterious...yes, and a total waste of a Brillliant mans time. My guess is that Marilyn would have had absolutely no comprehension of this man, or what he stood for, much less a thimble full of understanding of his work. I have seen that women are the worse judge of character that exists. You smile at them, and your ok, Even if you are a criminal. With women, you are only as good as you last mistake, and since their rules are mysterious, we keep making them. Mathematics is a love that will never betray you, and if you do make a mistake, you can start over.

          Richard,

Although Marilyn had her own problems, she was not an ignorant woman. She read a lot and could converse on a lot of subjects that might surprise you. You need to read more about her as a person, and not the pin up girl she showed to the World.

Marilyn Monroe was a brilliant woman in her own right, and it does not surprise me that Hawkings realizes that. My guess is that Hawkings would have absolutely no other comprehension of Marilyn or her universe. LOL You complain that some women like criminals. Who are the criminals? Their fathers and their lovers. And you think the women are bad? C'mon, man!

Mr Pratt, you seem judgmental and uninformed about Marilyn Monroe. She wasn't the empty-headed fluff doll that was her public persona. When she was 16 she read Tolstoy, Milton and Whitman. She studied literature at UCLA and acting at the LA Acting Lab. Her IQ was 168. That's a bit higher than mine and doubtless significantly higher than yours.

Hard to believe that you're now 70!

And though I haven't always agreed with you, I still appreciate the fact that your theories do require us to consider other possibilities.

Men not understanding women, women not understanding men, I wonder (not to be stupid I hope) if the gay world has similar problems? How very fitting that such an amazing man would hold women up to be the biggest mystery of his life. It just shows how human he is, even though he seems superhuman. Happy Birthday to one of the most amazing men to have ever lived. I hope you have many more. P.S. This guy is no doubt Marilyn Monroe's greatest catch.

How the HELL does he know there is no HEAVEN? I guess if HE says so, then it must be true (cough, cough)

No wonder he knows nothing about women. Surprised he admits it.

              Happy 70th Birthday, Dr. Hawking!

Hope he's in the next "Star Trek" movie. I remember him being on Star Trek: The Next Generation, once.

He should try thinking of women as extra-terrestrials, sometime. Might strip away some mysteries about 'em.

Took a genius more time to figure out something that most of us knew already.

People are a mystery, and half of them or women. So yes, therefore women are a mystery.

women are not to be understood they are to be enjoyed and cherished for not being understood

To: the whack job religious zealots who think they need to post trash about a GOD on this page you need to realize that Mr. Hawking and many other great men have shown us that religion is nothing but a tool to control the weak minded fools of the world. and give them the morals that they couldn't figure out on their own.

Why not talk about God? anyone who would reject the idea that there could be a greater purpose for us on earth, should look no further then the smallest undiscovered thing and the largest undiscovered thing to realize that we know nothing. Look at the sky and the stars, where does it end? look at the smallest element, what is smaller? In the Bible God says "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the Ending. Science cannot answer the simplest questions. Where did sight come from? emotions? why do we even reject or except God? If we don't believe, why do we even care what others believe?

Sir! If men could figure women out...it would kiil the thrill of the chase. Only women know what women want or why they do what they do, women see things that men just don't. Leave some things to mystery and be happy.
