    Hubble celebrates 23 years on the job with a Horsehead of a different color

    The Horsehead Nebula shines in a Hubble Space Telescope image that marks this month's 23rd anniversary of the orbiting observatory's launch.

    Astronomers have come out with a Horsehead Nebula of a different color to celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 23rd birthday.

    The iconic nebula in the constellation Orion, about 1,500 light-years away, can be seen even through small telescopes. In visible light, it's a dark dust cloud in the shape of a horse's head, silhouetted against a backdrop of glowing hydrogen gas. But the Horsehead takes on a completely different look in the new view released Friday.


    "This image was taken in the infrared," Joe Liske, an astronomer from the European Southern Observatory, explains in a video introducing the picture. "In infrared light, we can pierce right through some of the bulky plumes of dusty material which usually mask and obscure the inner regions of the Horsehead. The result is this rather fragile-looking structure, made of delicate, wispy folds of gas — very different to the nebula's appearance in the visible."

    The infrared glow, captured by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, lights up the nebula's clouds from within. Liske says it's "a fitting celebration of an incredible 23 years of the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope."

    The Hubble team traditionally releases an eye-popping shot to celebrate the anniversary of the space telescope's launch on April 24, 1990. As part of this year's celebration, the Hubble Heritage Project asked astronomers around the world to send in their own Horsehead Nebula photos, and you can see the collection via Flickr and Tumblr.

    Like a veteran racehorse, Hubble is hitting its stride — but that hasn't always been the case. The first couple of years of operation were hampered by a flaw in the telescope's main mirror. Equipment to compensate for the problem was installed during a crucial series of spacewalks 20 years ago, in 1993. The shuttle Atlantis paid a final servicing visit to Hubble in 2009, and the telescope has been working just fine since then.

    Hubble operations have been extended through 2016 — and if the telescope remains in good working order, it's likely to continue being funded at least until 2018, when the $8.8 billion James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled for launch. Eventually, Hubble will have to be sent down to a fiery doom. But who knows? Maybe the old telescope will hang around to experience life after 30.

    It's hard to believe it's been 23 years. I think we've gotten our monies worth. The science developed from Hubble images is astounding. It was a rough start but once they made the first repairs it was off to the races. Thank you to the Hubble team.. You've done very well.

    Revisiting a cosmic cat's paw

    The pawprint of a cosmic cat comes into sharper focus in this week's featured picture from the European Southern Observatory. This image of the Cat's Paw Nebula, released on Monday, combines data from the 2.2-meter MPG/ESO telescope at ESO's La Silla Observatory in Chile with 60 hours of exposures from a 400mm telescope manned by expert amateur astronomers Robert Gendler and Ryan M. Hannahoe.

    ESO says the additional color information from the amateurs brings out the faint blue nebulosity at the center of the "paw," while the ESO imagery fleshes the picture out with more detail. "The result is an image that is much more than the sum of its parts," the ESO team says in an image advisory. The nebula lies in the constellation Scorpius, 5,500 light-years from Earth. The Cat's Paw is considered one of the most active star formation regions in our galaxy. Let's just hope some astronomical image enhancement engineer doesn't try to airbrush out the cat.

    Where in the Cosmos
    The Cat's Paw Nebula served as today's "Where in the Cosmos" picture puzzle on the Cosmic Log Facebook page. Every week, I've been posting a picture to the page and asking Cosmic Log followers to guess the cosmic location.     Orion Nebula reveals an infrared rainbow

    The sparkles of hidden stars are revealed in a picture of the Orion Nebula that shows off the colors of the infrared rainbow.

    Do you see those twinkling lights, strung along a line that starts at the top right corner of the image? Those are stars in the earliest stages of their evolution, swathed in clouds of gas and dust. Astronomers focused on those protostars with the infrared-sensitive cameras of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Herschel space telescope.

    This color-coded image shows the scene as observed by Spitzer in one set of infrared wavelengths (8.0 and 24 microns, shown here in shades of blue), and by Herschel in somewhat longer wavelengths (70 and 160 microns, shown in green and red, respectively). Herschel monitored the emissions from cold dust particles once a week for six weeks, while Spitzer kept track of the emissions from the warmer dust, filling out the infrared rainbow.

    Astronomers found that the stars' brightness in infrared wavelengths varied by more than 20 percent during the observational time frame. That's surprising, because the astronomers expected variations in brightness to play out over a time frame measured in years or even centuries rather than weeks.

    What could cause the short-term twinkling? The astronomers theorized that lumpy filaments of gas might be streaming inward from a star's outer environs, temporarily warming up the dusty disk of material surrounding the star. An alternative hypothesis would be that material occasionally piles up on the inner edge of the disk, casting 'shadows" that temporarily darken the outer disk. In any case, the observations from Herschel and Spitzer show that the birth process for baby stars is a rough-and-tumble affair, with significant ups and downs.

    Members of the Herschel science team, led by Nicolas Billot, an astronomer at the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimetrique in Grenada, Spain, are preparing a paper about their findings.

    "Herschel's exquisite sensitivity opens up new possibilities for astronomers to study star formation, and we are very excited to have witnessed short-term variability in Orion protostars," Billot said today in a photo advisory. "Follow-up observations with Herschel will help us identify the physical processes responsible for the variability."

    Life and death in the galaxy next door

    The latest picture from the Hubble Space Telescope reveals a glittering star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud, one of the Milky Way’s satellite galaxies, plus a poor little greenish planetary nebula that just went poof.

    The hazy cloud of stars is NGC 1846, a globular cluster containing thousands of stars on the outskirts of the dwarf galaxy in the southern celestial hemisphere, about 160,000 light-years from Earth. The Large Magellanic Cloud and its smaller sibling (known as the Small Magellanic Cloud, what else?) are assemblages of stars that have been kicking around the Milky Way's environs for eons.

    Aging bright stars shine with bluish and reddish tones, while the middle-aged stars give off white light. The Hubble team says the most intriguing single object in the image isn't any of the thousands of stars that are bursting with life, but the little green puff highlighted in the inset picture. That's the glowing shell of gas created when a dying star puffs away its outer layers. It's not completely clear whether the puffball is part of the cluster, but measurements of the motions of the stars in the cluster and the stellar remnant at the center of the nebula suggest that it is.

    Which is more beautiful, the bright lives of the thousands or the deep-toned death of the one? You tell me.

    Pacman Nebula bares its teeth

    NGC 281 has been nicknamed the Pacman Nebula because it looks like the "Pac-Man" video-game character in visible light. This infrared view, captured by NASA's Wide-field Infrared Explorer, casts the nebula in a different light. You can see a series of cloud columns pointing toward the central star cluster, making the nebula look as if it's a Pac-Man with sharp teeth.

    Just in time for Halloween, a new image from NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer puts some fangs on the Pacman Nebula.

    The nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, formally known as NGC 281, was given its more whimsical nickname years ago because, in visible light, it looks like the dot-chomping character from the "Pac-Man" video game (as you can see below in the picture from the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona).

    This visible-light image of NGC 281 emphasizes the nebula's "Pac-Man" shape: a bright circle with a wedge missing to represent the character's mouth.

    NGC 281 is a cloud of gas and dust about 9,200 light-years from Earth, with a cluster of hot stars in the center. The dust obscures much of the light coming from the central cluster, designated IC 1590, particularly in the dark, dusty wedge that represents the Pacman's "mouth."

    The newly released infrared view from WISE cuts through the murk and reveals the hot stars at the center of the reddish-greenish nebula. The stars' ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds are blasting away at the surrounding dust from the inside out, giving the nebula a shell-like appearnce. Around the inner lining of the shell, you can see lots of eroded pillars of dust that point toward the center. Contained within the tips of those pillars are infant stars, squeezed into existence by the pressure of the radiation and the winds.

    You can think of those jagged pillars as the teeth of the Pacman. And if they also happen to look like a jack o' lantern's teeth, so much the better. After all, this is the weekend for things that go bump (or, in this case, bang) in the night.

    Hubble sights a starry necklace

    This beautiful Necklace Nebula, situated 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagitta and sighted by the Hubble Space Telescope, is the result of a stellar smash-up that happened long ago.

    When stars the size of our sun near the ends of their lives, they're prone to puff away their outer layers, creating glowing shells of gas and dust. These shells can take on the appearance of rings, or globes, or even complex butterfly shapes. Centuries ago, when astronomers looked at these phenomena through their telescopes, they looked like fuzzy, blobby planets — and they've been known as "planetary nebulae" ever since.

    In today's image advisory, the Hubble team says this particular planetary nebula came about when an agingi giant star whirled too close to its sun-sized companion, setting off a huge explosion. Because the stars were spinning around each other, most of the blast debris was ejected in a ringlike pattern, like water shooting out from a sprinkler. The jewels in the "necklace" are dense knots of hydrogen and oxygen gas thrown out by the blast. Scientists speculate that the gas clumped up because it was following magnetic field lines, or because of density fluctuations in the stars themselves.

    Hubble took this picture of the scene on July 2, using the Wide Field Camera 3. The image is color-coded to reflect emissions in wavelengths associated with different elements: hydrogen (blue), oxygen (green) and nitrogen (red).

    We're seeing the nebula today as it was 15,000 years ago, and astronomers surmise that the necklace ring was created about 5,000 years before that — which is just the blink of an eye in cosmic terms. The clumps are glowing in this picture because the gas is lit up by the ultraviolet radiation coming from the shattered stars. You can see the stars as a single bright dot at the ring's center. They're too close to each other to be made out separately, but based on repeated observations, astronomers surmise that the beat-up stars are still spinning around each other every 1.2 Earth days.

    From this far away, the nebula looks like a wearable piece of jewelry — but the ring is actually 12 trillion miles wide, which is wider than our own planetary system. You couldn't wear this necklace, even if your head was as big as Pluto's orbit.

    A close-up shot of the Lagoon Nebula's center shows the delicate structures formed when powerful radiation from young stars interacts with the hydrogen cloud from which they sprang. The color-coded image was created from exposures taken with the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys.     Waves break on a stellar lagoon

    Today's stunner from the Hubble Space Telescope shows clouds of gas and dust in the Lagoon Nebula, being sculpted by the intense radiation from hot young stars nearby. The nebula is so named because of a wide lagoon-shaped lane of dust at the heart of the star-forming region, 4,000 to 5,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. The scene may look as placid as an earthly cloud at sunset on the first day of autumn ... but the Lagoon is actually a boiling sea of starbirth.     I agree I believe there are other things out there too. We exist in just one of many galaxies, How do any of us really know what is out there? I also think it looks like there are "creatures" in a lot of the pictures like these..and this one has a face like figure in the upper left...astonishing!
